The message of Jesus is simple: “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” (St. Mark 1:15) Though simple as a statement, it is revolutionary in its import. It means that everything we’re doing is all wrong, and we need a new world order.
Jesus implies that we need a government based on the will of God and not on the will of humanity. Everything we’re doing is all wrong principally because everything we do is based on values that are inconsistent with God’s will.
When we think of the misery index of our world, homelessness, starvation, inadequate health care, terrorism, and on and on, we can see that all of these things are due to human selfishness, human greed, and human hatred of other people.
Since we believe that we are all the children of one God, it would seem that we should be able to sit down and reason together, but we have never been able to do this, and it doesn’t appear that it will happen in the near future.
As disciples of Jesus Christ, we must allow God to rule in our hearts and in all of our affairs. Our desire must be the desire Jesus expressed when He prayed what we have come to call the Lord’s prayer. In that prayer He said, “Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” (St. Matthew 6:10) This is really the desire of every human heart. The problem is that we can’t all agree on what God’s will is, and so, here we go.
The Christian’s hope, however, is a great hope: that His kingdom will come to earth, that the lion will lie down with the lamb, that every human need will be met and that every human will fulfill God’s will through his/her life.
