All of us are familiar with the sixth of the Ten Commandments which says, “Honor thy father and thy mother that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.” (Exodus 20:12 KJV) It is a commandment which needs to be read and preached and taught over and over again to young people today. There is very little respect for parents these days. I am horrified to hear how some children talk to their parents and to see how some of them treat their parents. Parents deserve to be respected and honored for no other reason than the fact that they are the source of our life.
The Bible, however, not only contains admonitions about how children are to treat their parents, it also has instructions about how parents are to treat their children. In Ephesians for example, Paul writes, “Fathers, provoke not your children to wrath, but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.” (Ephesians 6:4 KJV)
Both parents and children need a good talking to these days. Both parties are out of the will of God. Children are abandoned, abused, and murdered every day! One of the tragic realities of our society is that children and the elderly have become victims of predatory types.
If we are going to survive, there must be a fundamental respect among parents and children, and children and parents. We need an anointing that will bring parents and children together.
Let us love our children and give them every chance to succeed and become all that God has made it possible for them to be. Only in this way will our world be a safe place to live and God will be glorified through our living.
